Eligibility Requirements
The purpose of the CHIA Student Scholarship program is to provide financial assistance to CHIA Student Members who are enrolled in accredited Health Information Administration (HIA) or Health Information Technology (HIT) programs, AND to provide financial assistance to CHIA Active members who are enrolled in HIA or HIT accredited programs pursuing a specialty credential or a higher HIM credential than they currently hold, e.g., CCS or CCS-P pursuing RHIT or RHIA; RHIT pursuing RHIA. CHIA Active members enrolled in a Masters Degree Program in HIM are also eligible.
Eligible applicant for CHIA Scholarships must:
1) Hold CHIA Student Membership or CHIA Active Membership at the time of application; (Click Here to join CHIA)
2) Have selected California as their Component State Association (CSA) within their AHIMA membership
3) Be enrolled in an HIA or HIT or Masters in HIM accredited program and have completed at least 50% of that curriculum
4) Not have received a CHIA scholarship at any time previously
Student Scholarship applications will be based upon the following criteria:
1) Essay content and writing skill
2) Academic excellence (Only HIT, HIA, or Masters in HIM course grades will be considered in evaluating academic excellence)
3) Content and suitability of recommendation letters provided
4) The ’essay’ component of the scholarship application will be a response to the following two questions:
Describe your educational and/or career goals in health information management; and,
Describe how receiving a CHIA scholarship will assist you to meet your educational and/or career goals in health information management.
1) Essay response should be no more than 500 words
2) Copy of transcripts or grades. Unofficial transcripts are accepted if verified by Program Director
3) Completed application (Click on the Scholarship Application Form attached to this screen page; you can download, view and print out.)
4) Two reference letters of recommendation from health information management professionals.

Deadlines
The deadline for CHIA to receive the application is March 1st. Scholarship recipients are selected by the CHIA Awards Committee. Selections are made by April 1st. All applicants are notified by April 15th whether they received a scholarship award or not. The CHIA President (or designee) will notify each scholarship recipient of their award. Award recipients’ names and pictures will be included in the State Convention & Exhibit program. Scholarship recipients will be asked to send their picture to the Executive Office for printing in convention materials by April 20.
Recognition
Scholarship Award recipients will have scholarship monies awarded at State Convention & Exhibit. If recipient is not attending the convention, the scholarship check will be mailed immediately after the convention. Formal presentation of the scholarship awards is performed by the CHIA President or, if desired, by the vendor sponsoring the scholarship.
Recognition of the awardees will also be printed in a future peer-reviewed CHIA Journal and placed on the CHIA web site. To view past recipients, Click Here.
Contributions / Donations
As a non-profit educational association (IRS: 501-(c)(3)) contributions to the CHIA Scholarship Fund and FAME funds are tax-deductible. A suggested contribution of five ($5.00) dollars is solicited from the membership in conjunction with the annual dues assessment notice. Monies collected from the annual Silent Auction held at the State Convention & Exhibit also go to these two funds.
To recognize the generosity of individual members who contribute five ($5.00) dollars or more to the scholarship fund, CHIA will print the names of contributors in a CHIA Journal. Their name will also appear on the CHIA web site Donor page. Those who donate to these funds may do so ’in honor’ or ’in memory’ of another individual, if they wish.
Donations will be deposited into the funds as designated by the donor. If there is no designation, the funds will be deposited equally in the established funds.
