CHIA is committed to supporting improvements in teaching and learning and to help meet special needs of California’s HIA and HIT programs.
Program Grants to Health Information Administration and Health Information Technology programs are offered, through the CHIA Student Scholarship program, to support improvements in teaching and learning and to help meet special needs of an HIA/HIT program in California. The recipient of this award will be a California-based Health Information Administration or Health Information Technology Program that is accredited through AHIMA.
Annually, at the November Board meeting, the CHIA Board of Directors will determine if an HIA/HIT Program Grant will be awarded, will determine the amount of the grant and whether there are any revisions to the conditions upon which the grant will be awarded. Each accredited HIA and HIT program in California will be invited to apply for the grant and will receive instructions and deadline information. (Note: 2002 was the first year that this grant was approved.)
Program Grants will be awarded based upon:
1) Narrative application content;
2) Demonstrated financial need (as outlined in the narrative application) to support improvement(s) in teaching and learning within the HIA or HIT program;
3) Eligible HIA/HIT programs must be accredited by the AHIMA and based in California; and,
4) Any other criteria as determined by the CHIA Board of Directors.
Application process
Program Directors will submit to the CHIA Executive Director a narrative application for the grant, utilizing no more than 750 words. Included in the application should be a clear, concise description of the HIA/HIT program, the number of students in the program, a description of any special needs that the program has and/or how the grant will be utilized to improve the teaching and/or learning in their HIA/HIT Program.
The recipient of the Program Grant will be selected by the Awards Committee. The recipient will be announced at the CHIA State Convention & Exhibit.
The grant monies will be paid to the recipient program on a ’reimbursement or invoice basis.’ The HIA/HIT program will provide CHIA a copy of either an invoice or receipt for the expenses for which the grant is awarded. If, within six months after the grant is announced, the HIA/HIT program fails to provide an invoice or receipt for the products or services for which the grant was awarded, the grant will be cancelled.
Recognition of the awardees will also be printed in a future peer-reviewed CHIA Journal and posed to the CHIA web site.

Contributions / Donations
As a non-profit educational association (IRS: 501-(c)(3)) contributions to the CHIA Scholarship Fund and FAME funds are tax-deductible. A suggested contribution of five ($5.00) dollars is solicited from the membership in conjunction with the annual dues assessment notice. Monies collected from the annual Silent Auction held at the State Convention & Exhibit also go to these two funds.
To recognize the generosity of individual members who contribute five ($5.00) dollars or more to the scholarship fund, CHIA will print the names of contributors in a CHIA Journal. Their name will also appear on the CHIA web site Donor page. Those who donate to these funds may do so ’in honor’ or ’in memory’ of another individual, if they wish.
Donations will be deposited into the funds as designated by the donor. If there is no designation, the funds will be deposited equally in the established funds.
Donations will be accepted at CHIA Executive Office at anytime throughout the year, including with annual membership assessment. To get Donation Form Click Here; you can download, view and print out.
