On August 15, 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a long-awaited proposal regulation that would replace the ICD-9-CM code sets now used to report health care diagnoses and procedures with greatly expanded ICD-10 code sets, effective October 1, 2008. In addition, "Proposed Changes Would Improve Disease Tracking and Speed Transition to an Electronic Health Care Environment." Both regulations may be viewed at www.cms.hhs.gov/TransactionCodeSetsStands/02_TransactionsandCodeSetsRegulations.asp#TopOfPage . Comments on the ICD-10 code sets proposed rule are due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on October 21, 2008. Comments on the updated transaction standards proposed are due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on October 21, 2008.
