The annual national event, Health Information & Technology Week (HI&T), is held each November and was started in 1989 to recognize the work of health information management professionals who maintain and protect the health information of individuals nationwide.

In 2004 AHIMA initiated one week to be held each April, the national Health Information Privacy and Security Week (HIPS), which is dedicated to "making health care professionals, their employers, and the public increasingly aware of the improtance of protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information."
