The 2010 Health Information Privacy and Security Week will be held April 4-10.
National Health Information Privacy and Security Week, sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), is designed to raise awareness among health care professionals, their employers, and the public of the importance of protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information.
First initiated by AHIMA in 2004, one week each year is now dedicatd to "making health care professionals, their employers, and the public increasingly aware of the importance of protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information."
We can do much to make this week significant in terms of public education, including outreach to our internal and external communities to alert them to the importance of health care privacy rights and security responsibilities.
On April 21, 2005, the security provisions of HIPAA, the final implementation of HIPAA began. Use the HIPS week to educate and train the different consitituencies on the security provisions of the legislation and what is being done by your organization to comply.
Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to share the responsibilities and accomplishments of health information management professionals in the areas of privacy and security.
