Position Statement

What would be my vision statement for CHIA? “Supporting HIM professionals to advance HIM principles.” Here are some of the ways I feel CHIA can support my vision:

  • Provide affordable and accessible education for health information management (HIM) professionals and those coming up in the profession: CHIA continues to provide onsite educational sessions in populated areas, but what choices do the rural professionals have? How do those in the urban areas, with the increasing traffic coupled with the responsibilities of daily life, attend live meetings or seminars? CHIA utilizes WebEx, which provides another way to participate in educational sessions. Online is a great way to access education, but the format can be isolating and not very inspiring. Adding video can aid in the vibrancy of meetings. This platform has not been supported for video due to the size of attendees and privacy issues with webcams in the health care workplace. But what ways can CHIA add more remote “face-to-face” options for those in the outlying areas of our state? Can smaller attendee options with video be an option? Can these smaller online meetings be repeated or duplicated?
  • Train HIM professionals on how to advocate for HIM and retain a seat at the table of health care: How do other professions stay current? Bringing in experts in corporate or organizational strategies to stay in the game may provide new insights in how to keep ourselves at the table. We need to find ways to stay relevant in the current workplace climate while supporting the HIM principles and shining in the room with our expertise in Privacy, Consumer Advocacy, Medical Classification and all of our other talents!
  • Enhancing technology networking opportunities to all members, whether in urban areas or rural: Having moved from an urban area to a rural, I conduct all of my business, and some of my personal connections, through video platforms. Expanding video use may assist the rural HIM professional to feel more connected. Can we explore smaller video meeting options to serve our membership? The younger generation may appreciate this type of interaction. Utilizing video chat for HIM groups could be a marketing tool to grow our membership in California.
  • Market outside our state membership to highlight the great benefits of CHIA for current HIM professionals and the importance of HIM for health care in California: I talk to many in our state who are AHIMA members only. We need to consider the value of increasing our marketing resources in order to increase our membership. Should we consider a trial of a marketing team?

Staying current has been my mantra as of late. By expanding our access for members to education, providing support to stay relevant in the health care industry, broaden our outreach through the use of video meetings and a professional marketing arm, I feel that CHIA will move closer to my vision for our association.
