Position Statement

The health care industry is rapidly changing on many fronts, but the most prolific of these is information technology.

Health information management (HIM) and technology are broadly considered tools for improving care quality, reducing care disparities, and improving care outcomes, including patient and family experience. The care of patients with complex health care needs is often fragmented because patients receive care from multiple providers in disparate locations. Information related to this care is often not transmitted between providers or locations. Inadequate inter-provider communication and care coordination significantly lowers care quality and compromises patient safety.

CHIA is poised to lead this new age of information management and technology through its efforts of member education and collaboration with other organizations on the front lines of providing quality patient care and protections via electronic means. The most important points are that health information managers are educated and forward thinking in order to navigate the everchanging landscape of today’s health care environment. These points will require intense scrutinization of members’ skills and qualifications so that educational programs are developed which promote the health information manager as not only a leader in information management but also as an innovation leader and
thinker.

To fulfill this goal, CHIA’s vision should be that of: Developing information and technology leaders to meet the needs of health care.
