Position Statement

The Director candidates were asked to respond to the following question: As a CHIA Director you will help oversee and guide the Association. How can CHIA best pursue its mission via an “innovative approach” to develop health information professionals and advocate for practice excellence?

Across our health care industry, rapid legislative change and technologic advancement have shaped and grown our profession. Education has been and continues to be a key component of cultivating HIM professionals, as well as supporting the value of our work. The innovation of computers has allowed us to advance the paradigm shift; we can leverage this machinery and build on it. The next generation of experts can steer our commerce. We have a duty to steward the up-and-coming professionals and build bridges between the HIM community and the broader public.

Engaging and connecting our community and representatives is vital. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to serve as president of SDHIA. As current SDHIA Past President, I have made it a regular practice to extend a warm welcome to our students and invite them to join our monthly educational sessions. There is much diversity in the world, and we can collaborate to expand awareness and use this insight to build a better and brighter tomorrow. As Director, I will continue to encourage the next generation of leaders through greater outreach. One way to grow opportunity is by expanding scholarships in the HIM profession.

I will also find ways to reach out to the broader community to educate the public on the valuable work we do. Many people do not fully understand the breadth of the services we provide. I believe we can advance that knowledge, build trust, and promote our profession while being transparent. By increasing public awareness in the HIM field, we can spark further interest and encourage and mentor newcomers to the HIM career. There are many pathways in HIM, such as a coder, manager, release of information clerk, CDI specialist, birth/death/cancer registrar, application analyst, technician, or engineer. We can educate the next generation to the wide array of opportunities and foster their potential as they advance in their careers.

I have been actively engaged in the CHIA community for the past 19 years. During that time, I have attended and participated in numerous webinars, educational sessions, and leadership calls. These experiences have allowed me to listen to the diverse voices and needs of our members. I have come to appreciate the demand from our community to leverage the latest technological tools in our field. If elected, I will put into action my commitment to help build electronic databases, knowledge warehouses, and data repositories to empower our information professionals. I will welcome the viewpoints, insights, and participation of our members as we seek to implement these tools in thoughtful ways to promote practice excellence.

Moving forward, we can partner to accelerate innovation and provide a joint voice that is acknowledged and valued. I am passionate about HIM and will help maintain and encourage our future with commitment and innovation. Let’s connect the health information community together and catalyze our profession!
