Continuing Education
CEUs: 2 | HIIM Domain: Information Protection: Access, Disclosure, Archival, Privacy and Security

Program Description
Patient portals are one of the most effective and efficient ways to provide patients timely access to their health information; however, there are many considerations and operational challenges surrounding their use. Join us to learn how various facilities are working through operational challenges and discover what is being shared and why. This panel of subject matter experts will discuss how their facilities manage release of information through patient portals to better serve the patient and healthcare community.

Panel experts will discuss:

  • How is information being handled that you can legally restrict from patient access because it falls under one of the exceptions
  • Should results be displayed in the patient portal prior to finalization/review by the ordering physician?
  • Should substance use disorder and mental health records be available in the portal?
  • How is protected information about minors restricted from proxies?
  • Should minors be given patient portal accounts?
  • How is information sharing impacting the volume of amendment requests and the amendment/addendum process?

Overview: The purpose of this manual is to provide sufficient background information and specific guidelines for proper and adequate disclosure of information in response to a subpoena duces tecum. Although addressed primarily to the health information practitioner acting as "custodian of records" in an acute care hospital, it is designed to be equally useful for those who have this responsibility in other healthcare settings and to individual providers of healthcare.

All healthcare providers have the ethical and legal responsibility to protect the patients’ privacy and the confidentiality of information obtained or developed during the course of treatment. The protection of patient privacy and confidentiality has become a key measure for most healthcare organizations accrediting and regulatory external bodies.
