Something from Sally - President’s Message:

While writing my June message, I realized with surprise that this is my last one as CHIA President. I cannot believe how quickly my term went by, and I suspect it might be due to all the collaboration over the many Bylaw Amendments initiated by the Bylaws Committee that the House of Delegates (HOD) passed. CHIA produced several successful webinars and seminars this year thanks to the efforts of the volunteer members of the respective committees. What a busy year for us all!

Thank you to the Bylaws Committee Members for their volunteer time. I truly appreciate all the hours they have contributed to developing and fine-tuning the amendments. I also thank the Delegates for their generous time working with their members to ensure one voice before attending all the HOD meetings. A big shout-out to all of you who attended the CHIA Member Town Halls. You asked many questions about the bylaw amendments; it helped us further analyze and provide answers. This was a ‘member-driven’ effort started in the Spring of 2023. In my incoming president’s speech at CHIACON last year, one of my predictions was... "I don’t know how CHIA’s structure will look next year, but from what I heard in the HOD Meeting over the weekend, I know it will be something new and innovative, and I am looking forward to seeing it!"

Change is not easy for anyone. Many have told me it is best to recognize this as a fact and get on with the change. Our CHIA Members did just that. We got on with the change. On May 16, 2024, during the discussion period for the last Bylaws Amendment vote in the HOD, Daniel Castanon asked to speak to the House. His remarks were well received because he captured many of the members' feelings about these changes. I could not have said it better than Daniel that day, so please take the time to read Daniel’s remarks below:

Thank you so much for allowing me to express my feelings during the HOD as it pertains to the CLA's.

It's indeed a poignant moment for our local associations, and particularly for SDHIA, as we bid farewell to our continuing education in-person meetings. These gatherings have been more than just meetings; they have been a cradle for camaraderie and a nexus for networking opportunities that many of us have come to cherish. The collective efforts of our volunteers have been the lifeblood of our association, sustaining and nurturing it through time. However, the increasing demands on everyone's time have made it challenging to maintain the vibrancy of our volunteer-driven initiatives.

As we close this chapter, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you on this call. Your dedication and contributions have been the cornerstone of our association's success. Although we are transitioning to a new phase, I am optimistic about the future. I am eager to embrace a new mindset and continue to forge connections with all of you through the CHIA website and other electronic means. Let's carry forward the spirit of "component groups" into this new era of digital engagement.

In closing, just one last remark from me -  Something from Sally. Serving as your President this past year has been an honor and pleasure. All the best to you and your families.

NEW! Webinar: Sepsis Challenges… Where Are We Now? - Register Before June 13 for the Early Bird Pricing

June 26, 2024 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM | CEUs: 2

Payer Denials are at an all-time high for the hospital inpatient diagnosis of "Sepsis," whether as a principal diagnosis or as a secondary diagnosis. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) has announced that they have a concern about the hospital inpatient diagnosis of "Sepsis," which can result in a higher payment than other related diagnoses. Many providers have not changed and/or allowed the different clinical criteria that have now reached greater acceptance, i.e., Sepsis-3. Clinical documentation and ICD-10-CM coding for a sepsis diagnosis can sometimes be difficult and confusing. Attend this session and hear how Medical Coding and Clinical Documentation Integrity professionals should balance all this often conflicting information and ensure accurate and compliant clinical and coded data.

Important Update to the Recertification Policy and CEUs

Recent changes to the recertification requirements for AHIMA certifications have been updated after a thorough review and discussion among CCHIIM, the AHIMA board of directors, and AHIMA leadership. Based on the overwhelming feedback, additional information, and other industry factors, CCHIIM made the decision to adjust certification requirements and include continuing education from the component associations to the 40% requirement as follow:

Beginning January 1, 2025, forty percent of the CEUs needed in a 2-year recertification period must come from AHIMA and/or the Component Associations. Additionally, you can earn 60% of CEUs from ACEP providers, or other sources. This will allow you to explore a broader range of learning opportunities and enhance your professional development. To add value and flexibility, up to 20% of any additional CEUs earned from AHIMA, CAs, or ACEP providers in the last three months of a recertification cycle can be carried over to the next one. Click  here  to review details about recertification and the recertification guide.

Advocacy Action: Legislative and Advocacy Committee

The Legislation and Advocacy Committee has identified the bills of importance to the health information profession for the 2024 legislative cycle. The Committee has identified a noticeable uptick in bills that address artificial intelligence (AI). Approximately 60 new pieces of legislation have been included in California’s Bill Watch.
