Position Statement
CHIA Director candidates were asked to respond to the following: With California's health information community spanning multiple generations—from seasoned professionals navigating career transitions to Gen Z entering the workforce—how would you collaborate with CHIA Leadership to ensure CHIA's programs and communications resonate across all career stages and foster intergenerational mentorship?

We are fortunate to have multiple generations represented in our Health Information community. From the Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials to Gen Z and let us not forget the Silent Generation, who pioneered our profession.

As health information and technology continue to advance rapidly, it is vital that CHIA’s programs meet the needs of members at every level by ensuring engagement and satisfaction which requires intentional program design, effective communication, and collaboration. To support this, I propose the following:

  1. Programs: Strengthening Engagement Through Diversified Learning and Cross Generational Mentorship
    • Transition from traditional top down mentorship to a “reverse mentoring” model where Millennials and Gen Z share insights on digital interaction and emerging technology trends, while seasoned professionals contribute HIM practice expertise, operational systems knowledge, clinical context, and professional guidance. While many Boomers and Gen Xers possess strong technological skills, the goal is to create an environment where each generation can learn from one another.
    • Use CHIA Component Groups to create content for specific career phases, such as resume building, job search tips, exposure to a variety of HI career paths, credential bootcamps for emerging professionals and executive leadership workshops for those in career transitions and other areas of interest for the seasoned professional.
    • Flexible and Engaging Formats: Develop structured learning pathways and micro learning modules focused on core HI topics and areas of interest, while actively engaging members to provide feedback and maintain open dialogue with CHIA leadership ensuring they feel supported at every stage of their professional journey.
  2. Communications: Member-Centered
    • Partner with CHIA leadership to implement a multichannel communication strategy that delivers relevant content to every generation through the platforms they use most. This includes leveraging TikTok and Instagram to meet Gen Z and Millennials’ preference for authentic, visual content, while maintaining direct communication channels such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and email for Baby Boomers and Gen X.
    • Personalized Messaging: Utilize data analytics to tailor communications by directing scholarship and award opportunities to reach students directly, while providing established professionals with timely updates on state legislation, regulatory developments, and CHIA advocacy efforts.
  3. Collaboration with CHIA Leadership and Members
    • Strategic Integration: Align programs with the CHIA 2025–2027 Strategic Plan including the 10% membership growth target to ensure value for members across all career phases. Gather feedback from members to identify opportunities for added value, increased engagement, and measure success through membership growth, participation rates, and positive multi generational feedback.
    • Inclusive Governance: Representation of all generations in programs, committees, and leadership opportunities to ensure each generation has a direct voice in shaping the current and future goals of CHIA.

It is a privilege to give back to the Health Information community. If selected to serve on the Board of Directors, I will fully support CHIA’s initiatives and the “Desired Outcomes” outlined in the LEAD value proposition (Leadership, Education, Advocacy, and Discovery). I will also serve as a strong member advocate by promoting mentorship, education, encouraging engagement, and fostering open feedback and collaboration to enhance value for every member.
