Program Description
In an era where healthcare data is increasingly targeted by cybercriminals, understanding the cyberthreat landscape and learning how to stay safe online is crucial for healthcare professionals. The HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) website, often called the “wall of shame,” lists healthcare industry data breaches affecting the PHI of 500 or more individuals since 2009. As of mid-2023, it reported 5,558 incidents, totaling nearly 438 million breached PHI records - an average of over 86,000 exposed records every single day over the past 14 years. Alarmingly, the frequency of reported breaches is increasing. In just the last three years alone, 2,209 incidents were reported compared to 3,349 in the first 10 ½ years. These breach disclosures represent just one aspect of the complex reality of cybersecurity challenges in the healthcare sector.
This session provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive overview of current cyber threats. Understanding these threats is crucial for enhancing protection against current and future risks. This session will cover cybercrime, ransomware trends, social engineering, Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) bypass attacks. Additionally, nation-state-sponsored cyber attacks and geopolitical conflicts impacting healthcare delivery will be discussed, highlighting what to watch for to avoid being caught off guard.
Attendees will receive a link to the Health-ISAC Annual Cyber Threat Landscape Report, a valuable resource for influencing cybersecurity budget and investment decisions for senior leaders and IT/security practitioners in the healthcare sector.
The presentation will conclude with practical recommendations and additional resources to help attendees stay safe online. As data breaches and cyber incidents increase in frequency and severity, disrupting healthcare IT systems and demanding million-dollar ransoms, it is vital to stay informed. Malware, social engineering, and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) bypass attacks have caused large-scale breaches impacting big brand names like Uber, MGM, and more. This session will cover these threats and more, offering actionable tips to enhance your cybersecurity posture and safeguard your organization.
