Something from Sally - President’s Message: Because of YOU…CHIA is “Igniting a New Course for the Future"

Together, Delegates and Members Dedicate Time and Input to Propose New Ways to Steer CHIA into the Future | National Volunteer Month and Making a Difference

Thank you! I am overwhelmed with pride and want to express my gratitude to every member, delegate and leader for their individual efforts to move CHIA forward and “Igniting a New Course for the Future”.
After months of work that included surveys, Town Halls, committee meetings and multiple rounds of Bylaw changes, CHIA will be positioned to evolve with sunsetting the House of Delegates and embracing One Member/One Vote, a 9-member Board of Directors and a more diverse representative Nominating Committee.

  • Upcoming Round-Three proposed changes to the Bylaws (HOD Voting May 16) include a new Component Group structure that will replace the CLAs, and by definition in Component Relations Handbook, ASAE, 2012, are subgroups of an organization which may or may not be legally or financially tied to the lead association. Components represent a segment of members identified by location, discipline, or interest.Examples of components include chapters, communities, federations, allied societies, sections, councils, virtual chapters, member segments, or special interest groups. Watch for member Town Halls for more information.
  • The traditional House of Delegates (after two more meetings) will be phased out. CHIA will embark on a more equitable One Member/One Vote platform encompassing membership inclusivity in all voting.
  • Our expanded BOD provides longer terms, a continuous cycle of strong leadership to promote “institutional memory” and the ability to transition swiftly year after year.
  • Our new Board-appointed nominating committee will ensure diversity by soliciting applications from all members and all components for greater representation among leadership. Applications are being accepted now APPLY HERE and Make a Difference.

Because CHIA is a volunteer-driven association, every working member is a dedicated volunteer. So, in the spirit of  National Volunteer Month, join me in recognizing every CHIA volunteer. From Board members to Bylaws committee, from HOD members to every single committee member –  Making a Difference. Take a look at our all-new approach to  Volunteer Recruitment 2024-2025  through  Sign-Up Genius . Whether seeking a year-round commitment or preferring short-term projects, CHIA welcomes our members to find their place and earn AHIMA CEUs. Volunteer member engagement is the spark “Igniting a new course for the future”. Plan to sign up and be part of steering CHIA into  exciting new adventures.

Final CHIA House of Delegate Meetings | Discussion and Decisions Continue

Proposed CHIA Bylaw Changes | Voting 'Round Three' This May | Future Governance Structure

If you haven’t joined in the discussions so far, plan now to attend the final House of Delegates meetings. The CHIA Board of Directors has approved its 'Round-Three' proposed changes to the CHIA Bylaws , which are now available for review on the House of Delegates resources page. These changes will be voted on during the May 16, 2024, virtual CHIA House of Delegates. These ‘round-three’ amendments to the CHIA Bylaws provide an innovative way to connect California’s health information community by forming Component Groups. Additional changes include clean-up language and a few amendments that continue to align CHIA's bylaws with those required by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) under CHIA’s Affiliation Agreement. Please submit any questions to CHIA via Contact Us . During the April 18, 2024, All Delegate Meeting, delegates are invited to the conversation to further discuss these changes.

Please refer to CHIA's Event Calendar for information regarding the upcoming House of Delegate Meetings and stay tuned for upcoming Town Hall events:

  • April 18 – All Delegate Meeting
  • May 16 – Voting Meeting Round 3 of Bylaws Changes

CHIA Member Leaders Report on their Valued Participation in the 2024 AHIMA Advocacy Summit

Roberta Baranda, MS, RHIA, CHP and Adriana Preciado, MAOL, RHIA Worked “On the Hill” | Another Fantastic AHIMA-sponsored Summit in the Nation’s Capital

Day One was an education day focused on advocacy topics that included AI in healthcare, SDOH, the promise and future of ICD-11, dialogue on the current political landscape, and patient matching.  Day One ended with dialogue from an international panel from Canada. Day Two saw us off to our respective congressional offices.

The primary focus “On the Hill" was H.R. 7379 - The Patient Matching and Transparency in Certified Health IT (MATCH IT) Act of 2024, sponsored by Pennsylvania Representative Mark Kelly and Illinois Representative Bill Foster. Our HI professionals are working hard to solicit co-sponsor(s).  The MATCH IT Act of 2024 is a significant leap forward in advancing better patient identification for interoperability. This legislation will define a patient match rate, establish industry-standard data sets to improve patient matching, update health IT certification requirements, and promote interoperability requirements.  AHIMA continues to advocate for a ‘national patient identifier’ despite the ongoing challenges presented by legislative efforts. The other focus “On the Hill” involves the Health Information Workforce and Artificial Intelligence.  AHIMA is looking for congressional champions interested in introducing legislation that would report on non-clinical AI in healthcare, develop educational materials, champion an education campaign, and authorize funds to support non-clinical AI of HI professionals, patients, and clinicians.  See more here  AHIMA Advocacy Summit Info
